Military bases in Connecticut

There are total of 4 military bases in Connecticut (CT). One Navy base and three Coast Guard bases: the New London Submarine Base, the United States Coast Guard Academy, and the USCG R&D Center.

Connecticut may not have the expansive military bases in states like Colorado or Arizona. Still, it plays a crucial role in the defense industry, particularly in the design and manufacturing of submarines and helicopters, as well as in research and development for advanced military systems.

The state is home to the Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton. This base is often referred to as the “Submarine Capital of the World” and is the primary East Coast submarine base for the United States Navy. It hosts several attack submarines and is the primary training location for submarine crews. The base also includes the Naval Submarine School and the Naval Submarine Support Facility.

In addition to the submarine base, Connecticut’s contribution to the military is significantly bolstered by the presence of several major defense contractors. Most notably, Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics located in Groton, is a leading designer and builder of nuclear submarines for the U.S. Navy. Electric Boat’s facilities are involved in the construction and maintenance of submarines, including the Virginia-class attack submarines and the upcoming Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines.

Another major defense contractor, Sikorsky Aircraft, headquartered in Stratford, is a world leader in helicopter design and manufacturing. Sikorsky produces several models of helicopters for all branches of the U.S. military, including the Black Hawk helicopter, which the Army and other services widely use for various missions.

Pratt & Whitney, based in East Hartford, is a pioneer in designing and manufacturing aircraft engines for both commercial and military use. The company’s military engines power a range of fighter jets and other aircraft, playing a key role in the nation’s air power.

Connecticut’s defense industry is further supported by a network of smaller contractors and suppliers that provide specialized components and services. The state’s highly skilled workforce, along with its precision manufacturing and engineering tradition, contributes to the development of sophisticated military hardware and technology.

While Connecticut’s military footprint is not characterized by numerous large bases, its strategic importance lies in its technological contributions to the defense sector, particularly in undersea warfare and aerospace. The synergy between military installations and private defense contractors in Connecticut ensures that the state remains an essential part of the national security apparatus.
