Selfridge ANGB is located in 3,600 acres of land in Harrison Township, Michigan. It was named in honor of Lt Thomas E. Selfridge, the first military pilot of an aircraft driven engine and listed as the first victim who died in a powered air flight. Selfridge operation started on July 1, 1917 and on 1947 it was named Selfridge Air Force Base. It was on July 1, 1971 when Selfridge was assigned to Michigan Air National Guard which now houses different military units including the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. At present it houses the F-16 Falcons and the 927th Refueling Wing with KC-135s Stratotankers and the 127th Wing with C-130 Hercules.

The base is commonly called “The Home of the Generals” in Detroit because it houses the 150 generals who have served the base since Selfridge started its operation. It is also the only family housing owned by the government in the area. At present the US Army part of the base has 495 buildings which are mostly housing units and on the 127th part of the base has 228 buildings. This is the place for different military units including the Coast Guard, Air Force Reserve, Army, Air National Guard, Marine Corps and the Air Force. The Selfridge ANGB is proud to say that they are the only reserve force base that houses the five units of the military services.
The Selfridge ANGB is considered to be the busiest air base because of the different military installations in the base. The operation of the five military units includes the 680 buildings, the runways with 4,870 and 9,000 feet long, 39 miles of paved roads, seven miles of railroad track and more than a million in square yards of aircraft parking ramps and taxiway.
