  • USAG Wiesbaden Army Airfield

    Weibaden is the home for the Europe based United States Air Force which is located at the Lindsey Air Station since 1953 to 1973. At present, the United States 1st Armored Division is based at the Wiesbaden Army Airfield near Autobahn on its way to Frankfurt. The base is present with small American housing areas and kasemes which can be seen around the area. Because of the report that the base is for closure, a lot of Americans are moving out of the base to Heidelberg and Darmstadt.

    During the World War II, Wiesbaden had been spared by the bombings made by the allied forces. From 1940 to 1945, around 1,700 persons died and almost 18% of the houses in Wiesbaden were destroyed when it was attacked by the allied forces. On March 28, 1945, the US Infantry Regiment attacked Mainz to Rhine and the 319th Infantry Battalion assaulted near the Main River in Hochheim AM Main.

    The Americans arrested 900 Germans plus a warehouse with around 4,000 cases of champagne, Wiesbaden was then taken into custody by the US Army Forces. Wiesbaden did not have much damage unlike Frankfurt during the war which brought about the rumor that it was spared by the US Army Air Force because of the plan to make the place their headquarter after the war. The USAAF denied the rumor and answered simply that the economic and the location is the reason behind it. 

    Wiesbaden is the capital city of the Hesse which can be found at the southwestern side of Germany with a population of 275,400 excluding the 10,000 Americans employed by the American military.  This is the oldest spa town of Europe whose name means the “meadow baths” because of the number of hot springs which until now is still growing.

  • Spangdahlem Air Base

    It is a major US Air Force base located in small town of Spangdahlem in the city of Trier, Germany. The base host 52nd Fighter Wing comprising of some of the most sophisticated fighter jet planes such as F-16, Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt and more. The base also supports NATO operations including radar services. The fighter wing concentrates on maintenance of commissioned airplanes, air support and provides training exercises. The base was established in 1952 and offers wide range of US Air Force airplanes.

    The best feature of the base is its air mobility and combat squadrons. They support all cargo, air force and passenger operations in the region. The base also commands and offers maintenance to all airplanes of US Air force. It also supports other bases in other cities of Germany. After the closure of Rhein-Main Air Base in 2005, all airplanes and facilities were transferred to Spangdahlem and Ramstein Air Base. The base has a dedicated squadron capable of performing maintenance of airplanes of all sizes including C-17 Globemaster III used for cargo operations.

    The base is offering its service for more than 50 years and has been upgraded few number of times. There were different wings that stayed on the base such as 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, 36th and 49th Tactical Fighter Wing, and 52nd Fighter Wing that is still stationed today. The current wing also trained with other countries such as Poland in 1997 with Poland Air Force.

    After the departure of NATO supply line named as Bitburg Air Force, the 53rd Fighter Squadron became permanent to Spangdahlem Air base. Several fighter airplanes were transferred to the base and were put to operation instantly. Later most of old squadrons were deactivated and a new air squadron was formed as 480th Fighter Squadron on the base.

  • USAG Stuttgart

    The United States Army Garrison is located in the city of Stuttgart in the south of Germany. It operates as the center of flight operations and works along other US air bases in other cities of Germany. It is the permanent location of US Army headquarters. The base operates under the command of Colonel Carl Bird and it keeps constant communication with other bases in Germany. The base offers few basic facilities such as sport and fitness, health and more. The base is located on a small area with some facilities outside the premises of the base. The US troops does not stay on the base, instead the base have a separate place for troops to stay.

    In World War II the city was destroyed in bombing of allied forces and it was rebuilt after the war. During the Cold War the city became the command center of United States military along some European countries, which is commonly known as EUCOM and it still have its headquarters in Stuttgart. The US forces surrounded the city and stayed there during the war, which gave some protection to the city. Later most of US forces left the city but formed a small base.

    The USAG base in the city also has a small helicopter base at the southern part of Stuttgart Airport, which is usually used by high profile personnel. The helicopter base on the airport is maintained by US Army with air police of Germany having their own helicopters.

    The base comprise of personnel from US Army, Navy, Marines and all major defense organizations. The staff on the base also comprise of local nationals. The base also provides support to US force installations such as Kelley Barracks, Panzer Kaserne and more. The base works along local authorities to perform operations and provide support to other US installations in the country.

    The base also has a military hospital but it stands outside ofPatrickHenryVillage, located in the southern region ofHeidelberg. The project started in 1949 and it was completed in 1952, the base was completed by French and US Army engineers.     There are around 12,000 soldiers and civilians working on the base. The base has large empty space ideal for training exercise. The base does not offer much training exercises as there is large number of families living on the base. There are also some bachelors and under training officers staying in special houses on the base. Soldiers with families are provided different houses with more facilities for their families living on the base.

  • USAG Grafenwoehr

    Grafenwoehr is placed in magnificent Bavaria, it is near Nuremberg. When it comes to the main command, it is 7 º Command of Training of the Army with the basic mission of the formation. Moreover, there are like around 1000 individuals assigned like permanent part in Grafenwoehr. In the year 1998, the 7 º Army Command of Training (7ATC) initiated an exercise with live ammunition to train to the armored forces of work and companies in Grafenwoehr Area of Formation. This one is huge change in soil usage in terms of GTA that has totally supported the traditionally only maneuvers limited out of the road.

    So, it has been like ninety years of interesting history of this area Formation in the Royal Army of Bavaria and even fully continued with Wehrmacht. In addition, several celebrities visited this place, including Elvis Presley, the prince of Bavaria, Rock’n’Roll is on, too!

    When it comes to training, the Grafenwoehr Are of Formation (GTA) the year 2005, is update the ranges selected in GTA with the condition of the most advanced technology of support actually fully ranges and indicates whether they are correct & realistic tactically.

    To fully achieve their goal, the principal tasks include the renovation and in terms of modifications in the Complex range of multiple uses; continuation of recapitalization of current ranges to fulfill the doctrinal procedure and tactical realism; sending of the digital systems AAR to the ranges of primary qualification.

    It improves fixed and mobile targetry, and the constant development of the CMTC-LF.   • USAG Darmstadt Training Center

    It is a non-active base that was closed in 2008, as the authorities of the base was transferred to USAG Heidelberg, which is also located in Germany. The base was stationed with 22nd Signal Brigade and 66th Military Intelligence Group. There were around 9000 personnel living with their families on the base; there were approximately 4000 families living on base. The base comprised of both civilians and military personnel working for US military. The base also had a German airfield captured in 1945. There had been many changes on the base for better functioning of the base.

    The base is located around 30km from Heidelberg base and it comprise of number of sub-communities inside the base. The base also hosted number of US military programs; some programs are still active today while others are closed. Interestingly the base was also home to military newspaper. The base is also very near to city Frankfurt and all US military flights were strictly monitored by United States Air Force Europe.

    A good feature of the base was that it had all the features of a city such as school, health care facilities, parks, recreational activities and more. The area is surrounded with mountains and greenery, which offered families living on the base with perfect environment. The base was designed similar to German architecture; some of the buildings even belonged to World Wars.

    Aschaffenburg is a city located in the north-west of Germany; it provided number of faculties to the base such as logistic services, military support and other services to families living in the area. The city also provided supplies to the base and supported number of US military operations held in the area. But after its closure the city no longer provide services to Darmstadt base and does not support military operations.
